Rhode Island

The 2010 House and Senate have introduced a bill to require menu labeling in foodservice establishments with 20 or more locations nationwide. Calories would be required on menus and menu boards. A statement maybe included on menus that states nutrition information is based on standard recipes and product formulations, however, variations may occur due to differences in preparation, serving sizes, ingredients, and special order. The law shall be null and void when federal menu labeling goes into effect. The act shall take effect on January 1, 2011. The House Health, Education and Welfare Committee is holding the measure for further study. The Senate Health and Human Services Committee is reviewing the bill.

The 2009 state legislature introduced two bills that would have required foodservice establishments to display calorie information on menus and menu boards. Both bills would have applied to establishments with 15 or more locations statewide. The bills would have taken effect January 1, 2010. The 2009 legislative session ended before the bills were addressed.
