Ohio

Legislation introduced in the 2009-2010 state session to regulate nutrition standards in the public school system continues to be considered. The food and beverages available to students through vending machines must contain less than 200 calories, and less than 10 percent of the total calories can be derived from saturated or trans fats. The House bill has passed the third read, and the Senate bill is under review of the Education Committee. In 2007, a bill to create the Child Wellness Advisory Council died in the Education Committee. The bill would have set nutrition standards for the public school system.

The Ohio legislature, in 2007, gave the Director of Agriculture the authority to regulate nutrition information in foodservice establishments. The Director of Agriculture is the only authority that can impose or adopt any legislation regarding food nutrition information.

In 2007, a bill was introduced that would have prohibited the storage, distribution, or service of any food containing trans fat in a foodservice establishment. The bill died at the end of the legislative session.

Cleveland, OH

A voluntary resolution has been adopted by the Cleveland City Council to encourage the elimination of artificial trans fat.

Columbus, OH

Columbus has formed the Health Choices Commitment. The group includes: the Central Ohio Restaurant Association, Columbus Public Health, the Columbus-based restaurant chain Donatos, and Bob Evans Farms. The goal of the group is to devise a voluntary measure that restaurants can take to help the city reduce its high levels of diabetes and obesity among city residents. Efforts may include putting calories on menus and having restaurants offer more healthful options. The group is to report their findings and recommendations to Mayor, Michael Coleman at the end of Summer 2010.
