Oregon

On June 17, 2009, the Governor signed a nutrition labeling requirement into law. The regulations will affect chain restaurants with 15 or more locations nationwide. The Department of Human Services is to adopt rules to administer and enforce the regulations. Calories must be displayed on menus, menu boards, and food tags by January 1, 2011. The following nutrition information: calories, grams of saturated and trans fats, grams of carbohydrates, and milligrams of sodium must be made available upon request beginning January 1, 2010.

In 2007, Oregon implemented standards for foods served in the public school system. No snacks with more than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving are allowed.

Another proposal introduced in 2007 would have prohibited any foodservice establishment from offering customers foods containing trans fat. The third proposal of 2007 would have prohibited local public health officials from requiring menu labeling information unless the Department of Human Services gave permission. The two proposals died at the end of the legislative session.

Lane County, OR

Lane County Commissioners are considering a proposal that would mandate calories on menus. The mandate would apply to foodservice establishments with 15 or more locations nationwide.

Multnomah County, OR

The County Board of Commissioners has voted down a proposal that would ban trans fat; however, the County Board of Commissioners has adopted nutrition labeling. Calories must be posted for standard menu items in foodservice establishments with 15 or more locations nationwide. Establishments must also provide milligrams of sodium, grams of carbohydrates, and grams of saturated and trans fats. Between January 15, 2009 and July 15, 2009 foodservice establishments had to provide documentation to health inspectors that showed they were obtaining the required nutrition information. Beginning July 15, 2009, all foodservice establishments must be in compliance.
