New Jersey

In June 2009, a bill to require chain restaurants to provide nutrition information was introduced. Chain restaurants must list calories on menus, menu boards, and similar signage. Restaurants must provide nutrition information on saturated and trans fat, carbohydrates, and sodium upon request, and there is nothing preventing a restaurant from including more information. Chains with 20 or more locations statewide are affected. On January 17, 2010, the bill was signed into law. It will go into effect in one year.

In 2004, 2006 and 2008, New Jersey explored menu labeling but each time no action was taken. The legislation would have required food establishments to list nutrition information on all standard food and beverage items.

In 2006, New Jersey considered a ban of artificial trans fat in food preparation at restaurants. The proposed regulation would have phased out the use of trans fat in cooking oils, shortening, and margarines in all menu items. The bill is no longer active.

In 2007, New Jersey did establish nutrition restrictions on food and beverages sold or given away at schools. Schools were required to reduce the quantity of products with trans fat by September 1, 2007.
