Beginning January 1, 2010, more than 110 Michigan hospitals are trans fat-free. The voluntary pledge to eliminate trans fat from hospital vending machines, cafeterias, and patient nutrition programs began on November 1, 2008. More hospitals have pledged to eliminate trans fat throughout 2010. The voluntary effort is in support of a statewide effort to improve patient and community health.
In 2007 the state legislature introduced a bill that would allow foodservice establishments to post a statement about the absence of artificial trans fat in food. Three additional bills were introduced the same year regarding trans fat. They would have required the disclosure of trans fat information on menus and banned trans fat in all foodservice establishments. The three bills were referred to the House Health Policy Committee where they died.
A proposal to ban trans fat from restaurants by 2008 was withdrawn due to lack of support.
