Maine

The 2009 state legislature introduced a bill that would have eliminated trans fat from being stored, distributed, or used in food preparation within state eating establishments. The bill passed in the House, but died in the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services. The bill was placed in the legislative dead files on April 9, 2009.

On May 15, 2009, the Governor signed a bill to increase access to nutrition information. The calorie-posting requirement would apply to eating establishments with 20 or more locations nationwide. Posting the following statement would be required, “To maintain a healthy weight, a typical adult should consume approximately 2,000 calories per day; however, individual calorie needs may vary.” The law takes effect on February 1, 2011.

The state legislature previously proposed nutrition labeling in 2003 and 2005, but both bills died at the end of each legislative session because no action was taken.
