Indiana has been looking at nutrition labeling since 2006. The 2009 House introduced a bill that would require foodservice establishments with 20 or more locations statewide to provide nutrition information to consumers for each menu item. The state House passed the bill and the Senate Committee on Commerce and Public Policy and Interstate Cooperation reviewed the bill, but no action was taken before the end of the legislative session.
A similar bill introduced in 2008 would have applied to establishments with 10 or more locations statewide. The nutrition information that would have been required includes: calories, grams of total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, fiber, sugars, proteins, and milligrams of sodium. The bill died at the end of the legislative session.
In 2006, a bill was adopted that required the Department of Education to provide information about food served in the public school system. At least 50 percent of the food sold in schools needs to have less than 10 percent of its calories from saturated or trans fats.
