Hawaii

The 2009 state House introduced the Menu Education and Labeling Act. The Act would require food establishments to display nutrition information on menus, menu boards, and in brochures that are available upon request. The nutrition information to be listed is: calories, grams of saturated fat, grams of carbohydrates, and milligrams of sodium. The listing of all nutrition information except calories would be effective January 1, 2020. The listing of calories would be effective January 1, 2012. The bill passed the state House and was referred to the Senate Health Committee. It has carried over into the 2010 legislative session.

The state Senate has introduced a bill to reduce and eliminate trans fat. The bill provides that every food establishment shall be free of artificial trans fat with more than 0.5 grams per serving in oils, shortenings, and margarines by January 1, 2011. The deadline to be trans fat-free in cake batter or deep fried yeast dough is January 1, 2012. The exception would be for items sold in their original manufacturer’s packaging. The Health Committee is currently reviewing the bill.

In 2008, legislation was adopted that required the Department of Education and the Hawaii public school systems to submit a report on the public schools menu with vegetarian options that use fresh fruit and vegetables while minimizing trans fat. Both the House and Senate have introduced legislation in 2010 to restrict public schools from serving foods containing artificial trans fat at schools and through vending machines. Both the Health and Education Committees in both houses are reviewing the bill.

In 2007, the Hawaii State Department of Health began examining the feasibility of reducing or eliminating the use of trans fat in food preparation and in the foodservice industry.
