In an effort to prevent obesity, both the Florida House and Senate have introduced bills in 2010 directed to all Floridians, which uses the media to promote maximum public awareness of the latest research on healthy lifestyles and chronic disease through statewide programs. As part of this initiative, menu labeling would be required on menus and menu boards or on a menu insert. A statement must also be included directing consumers to the location of additional nutrition information. The additional nutrition information to be provided is: milligrams of sodium, grams of trans fat, grams of saturated fat, milligram of cholesterol, grams of carbohydrates, grams of sugars, and grams of protein. A restaurant would not be held liable for errors in numbers reported as long as they provided the nutrition information in good faith. From January 1, 2011 – December 31, 2011, all foodservice establishments with 20 or more locations statewide would be required to be incompliance with the regulations, and beginning January 1, 2012, all foodservice establishments statewide would be required to be in compliance of menu labeling. Both bills died in the Committee on Health Regulations.
In 2009, Florida introduced three bills that would have required foodservice establishments to list total calories on menus and menu boards, but all three bills were withdrawn from consideration. In 2008, two bills were introduced addressing nutrition standards in schools. One of the bills requested the nutrition value of prepared meals be made available to the public. The second bill called for the creation of the Florida Healthier Child Care and School Nutrition Act. It required the elimination of trans fat in schools. Both the 2008 bills died in Senate committees.
In 2007, a bill requiring nutrition standards for trans fat content of food available on school campuses was introduced but died in committee.
