District of Columbia

‘The Trans Free DC Act of 2009’ was introduced in March 2009 to ban trans fat in foodservice establishments. No further action was taken.

The Menu Education and Labeling (MEAL) Act of 2009 was introduced by Phil Mendelson and Marion Berry. The bill would require foodservice establishments with 10 or more locations nationwide to post calories on menus and menu boards. Printed menus would also have to include saturated plus trans fat, carbohydrates, and sodium. For menu boards, additional nutrition information would be required upon request. No action has been taken to date. The District of Columbia has been expressing interest in menu labeling since 2003.
